The first steps you'll have to do when you enter in Pripyat is looting its junk. There's some places around which spawns items like: Tire, rusty tools (wrenches, etc), buckets, old shoes, paper, etc. Scavange around and sell your loot to the NPC called Artyom Reznov located at the UAF Outpost.

Tips:
Scavange with a group of people and share its loots. You can get attacked by mutants while walking in the ruins.
Purchase cheap weapons with the few chips you'll earn -- use them for quests.
Use the scavanger role to sell your loot for 2x more money.
